Innovative Veterinary Health

Zoominals Sports Vet+

We are a veterinary clinic based in Balcairn, North Canterbury and offering visiting services throughout Canterbury and beyond. We offer a diversified approach to animal health, which aligns with individual values and enables science to blend naturally with a wider approach to animal health and wellness.

Our vision is to empower people to explore a diversified approach to animal health and we do this through an innovative team of veterinary and animal health experts.

I’m Sara

I’m the founder of Zoominals and am delighted to be able to bring a science-based diversified veterinary service to North Canterbury.

I am passionate about sports medicine, biomechanics and wellness, and encompass this into both my clinical work and teaching. I am also a learning junkie and am constantly looking for opportunities to upskill and learn more. I love being able to make a difference to my patients’ and clients’ quality of life by looking at the bigger picture of health and addressing problems with a holistic yet scientific approach.

What Do We Do?

Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Referral Service

We offer referral services for rehabilitation following injury/surgery, and to address biomechanical concerns (companion animal and equine):

  • Rehabilitation from injury and/or surgery
  • Rehabilitation plans for clinics to follow
  • Conservative management of injuries where surgery is not an option
  • Management of inherited conditions; hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, spinal conditions
  • Investigation and treatment of lameness and poor performance

Orthotics, Prosthetics and Rehabilitation

We supply and fit orthotics and prosthetics for dogs and cats that have suffered injury to a limb that then requires extra support, or to those who have undergone limb amputation. We use the services of a team of experts in the USA who custom make the devices unique to the individual, and we offer a complete fitting, rehabilitation and support service.

Biomechanics Assessments

We use objective software to perform high-speed video capture and biomechanical analysis of an individual’s movement, including measurement and comparison of linear velocities, accelerations and angular rotations of individual motion units. We supply findings of these sessions in reports and can utilise these findings to aid in investigation of poor performance and behavioural changes, where biomechanics are suspected to be a contributor. We can also use these reports as a measure and monitoring tool of treatment and progress on rehabilitation and training plans and can include riders in these measurements to aid in ridden training in horses.

Pain Clinics

We offer pain clinics both from our base and from satellite locations in which we address the complex area of chronic pain management. Using combinations of drugs and physical therapies tailored to the individual we ensure that management of chronic pain conditions is optimal. Treatment options include but are not limited to:

  • Medication
  • Supplementation
  • Acupuncture
  • Manual therapy
  • Cold laser therapy
  • Athletic taping
  • Physical exercise/rehabilitation plans

Treatment – Equine Headshakers

We offer a cutting edge and evidence-based and supported treatment option for equine headshakers, using electroacupuncture/PENS treatment.

Regenerative Medicine

We offer stem cell therapy and PRP (platelet rich plasma) therapies to support and aid in healing of orthopaedic injuries in both companion and equine patients. By harvesting and preparing autologous (the body’s own) cells and then reintroducing them to sites of injury, healing can be accelerated and degeration can be slowed.

Hire of Rehabilitation Equipment

Rehabilitation equipment can be costly to purchase so we offer a hire service for rehabilitative equipment, including a cold laser (training supplied) and rehabilitation exercise equipment. Equipment can also be supplied on a lease-to-own basis, should longer term training with a piece prove particularly beneficial to a patient. We have a supply of small animal and equine equipment available.
